A visit to the Marais Vendéen Ecomuseum

A practical guide to Le Daviaud
During your stay at Les Amiaux campsite in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, discover the traditions of market gardening by visiting the Le Daviaud eco-museum in La Barre-de-Monts. This unique site showcases the nature, heritage and traditional know-how of the Breton marshlands of the Vendée.
Visit Daviaud is the largest open-air museum in Western France. It offers a complete immersion in the environment, arts and popular traditions of the Vendée.
On-site exhibitions and reconstructions highlight emblematic elements of our heritage:
- La bourrine: traditional marsh habitat, typical and picturesque.
- The old Daviaud farm: a building dating back to the early 17th century, an example of rural construction in days gone by.
- The island’s barn and granary: built before the 18th century.
- A working salt marsh, with a demonstration of the salt-maker’s trade, and its salorge (salt loft).
- In the salorge, a collection of objects illustrates the daily life and history of the marsh’s inhabitants.
- A farm with its animals to recapture the rural atmosphere of yesteryear.
Animations punctuate the visit:
- Themed tours and demonstrations of traditional skills.
- Participative workshops (wool weaving, butter making, etc.), to relive the gestures of yesteryear.
- For children: treasure hunts and cart rides, for a fun and interactive discovery experience.
